Master Planning
About Master Planning
Campus Planning is the centerpiece of facilities improvements at St. Mary's College of Maryland. Over the last two decades, the College has developed a series of master plans and that have resulted in the College doubling the size of its physical plant to support the growth and program needs of Maryland’s Public Honors College. Clearly defined principles and guidelines, established through collaboration with a number of distinguished architects and planners, including Jacquelin Robertson, Peter Bohlin, and Michael Vergason, have served to create a cohesive and architecturally rich setting. The last Campus Facilities Plan, developed in 1999, provided for new academic, administrative, student housing, and recreational facilities. This plan was supplemented in 2000 with the development of the Maryland Heritage Project a joint program of the College and Historic St. Mary's City that advances the scholarship, study, and interpretation of the historical legacy of Maryland's first capital.
Current Master Planning Efforts (May 2011)
The process for creating a new 15-year campus master plan began in spring 2011. The aim of the master plan is to provide a quantitative and qualitative assessment of the College’s needs as well as recommendations for long range facilities improvements. This plan will be comprehensive, including a facilities plan and a landscape master plan, which will incorporate the newly accredited St. Mary’s Arboretum. Preliminary space analysis and program needs assessments are being conducted to set the ground work for detailed planning efforts which will begin during the fall ’11 semester. The current master planning effort is expected to be a two year process finishing sometime in the spring of 2013.
