Eligibility for CORE 350
In order to enroll in CORE 350, students should meet one of the following criteria:
a) junior standing
b) completion of all other Core Curriculum requirements
c) approval by the Dean of the Core Curriculum and First Year Experience, in consultation with the Core Curriculum Committee
Enrollment in CORE 350
1) Enrolling in CORE 350 concurrently with an Independent Study or Directed Research for a minimum of 4 credits (Section 01)
*Getting Approval
Students must get approval from their instructor and the Dean of the Core Curriculum and First Year Experience for the independent study or directed research to meet the Experiencing the Liberal Arts in the World requirement. In order to do so, students will submit a form, available from the Registrar’s Office, and eventually online, on which they note
a) the title of the independent study or directed research
b) the name of their faculty mentor
c) the semester in which the course is being taken and
d) the signature of the faculty mentor indicating whether the journal and reflective piece are being submitted to the faculty mentor as part of the course requirements for the independent study/directed research or whether the journal and reflective piece will be submitted directly to the Dean of the Core Curriculum and First Year Experience.
*Deadline for Form Submission
This form must be submitted to the Dean of the Core Curriculum and First Year Experience by the end of the first week of the semester in which the student is enrolled in CORE 350. The Dean will notify students about the status of their request by the end of the Wednesday before the add/drop period closes. Students whose requests are not approved will automatically be dropped from CORE 350.01
*Deadline for Submission of Work
The work for CORE 350 must be submitted to the instructor as outlined in his or her syllabus or to the Dean of the Core Curriculum and First Year Experience by the last day of the exam period for the semester in which the student is enrolled in 350. The Dean will work with the Core Curriculum Committee to evaluate these items for CORE 350 credit.
2) Enrolling in CORE 350 concurrently with an Internship of a minimum of 4 credits (Section 02)
*Getting Approval
Students must get approval from their instructor and the Dean of the Core Curriculum and First Year Experience for the internship to meet the requirement. In order to do so, students will submit a form, available from the Registrar’s Office, and eventually online, on which they note
a) the site of the internship
b) the name of their faculty mentor
c) the semester in which the course is being taken and
d) the signature of the faculty mentor indicating whether the journal and reflective piece are being submitted to the faculty mentor as part of the course requirements for the internship or whether the journal and reflective piece will be submitted directly to the Dean of the Core Curriculum and First Year Experience
e) the signature of the Internship Coordinator indicating that the student has been approved for participation in the internship

This form must be submitted to the Dean of the Core Curriculum and First Year Experience by the end of the first week of the semester in which the student is enrolled in CORE 350. The Dean will notify students about the status of their request by the end of the Wednesday before the add/drop period closes. Students whose requests are not approved will automatically be dropped from CORE 350.02.

The work for CORE 350 must be submitted to the instructor as outlined in his or her syllabus or to the Dean of the Core Curriculum and First Year Experience by the last day of the exam period for the semester in which the student is enrolled in 350. 3) Enrolling in CORE 350 concurrently with a Semester or Year-Long Study Abroad Program in an SMCM Signature program (Section 03)
*Getting Approval
Students must get approval from the Dean of the Core Curriculum and First Year Experience for the study abroad experience to meet the requirement. In order to do so, students will submit a form, available from the Registrar’s Office, and eventually online, on which they note
a) the site of the study abroad experience
b) the name of the specific program, if appropriate
c) the semester or year in which the study abroad experience will take place
d) the signature of the Director of International Education indicating the student has been approved for participation in the study abroad experience.
*Deadline for Submission of Form
This form must be submitted to the Dean of the Core Curriculum and First Year Experience by the end of the first week of the semester in which the student is enrolled in CORE 350. The Dean will notify students about the status of their request by the end of the Wednesday before the add/drop period closes. Students whose requests are not approved will automatically be dropped from CORE 350.03.
*Deadline for Submission of Work
The reflective piece must be submitted to the Dean of the Core Curriculum and First Year Experience by the end of the add/drop period of the semester during which the student returns to the SMCM campus. The Dean of the Core Curriculum and First Year Experience will work with the Core Curriculum Committee to evaluate these items for CORE 350 credit.
4) Enrolling in CORE 350 concurrently with a Semester or Year-Long Study Abroad Program in an SMCM-approved Exchange program (Section 04)
*Getting Approval
Students must get approval from the Dean of the Core Curriculum and First Year Experience for the study abroad experience to meet the requirement. In order to do so, students will submit a form, available from the Registrar’s Office, and eventually online, on which they note
a) the site of the study abroad experience
b) the name of the specific program, if appropriate
c) the semester or year in which the study abroad experience will take place
d) the signature of the Director of International Education indicating the student has been approved for participation in the study abroad experience.

This form must be submitted to the Dean of the Core Curriculum and First Year Experience by the end of the first week of the semester in which the student is enrolled in CORE 350. The Dean will notify students about the status of their request by the end of the Wednesday before the add/drop period closes. Students whose requests are not approved will automatically be dropped from CORE 350.04.

5) Enrolling in CORE 350 concurrently with a 4-credit SMCM Study Tour (Section 05)

Students must get approval from the Dean of the Core Curriculum and First Year Experience for the study tour to meet the requirement. In order to do so, students will submit a form, available from the Registrar’s Office, and eventually online, on which they note
a) the name and course number of the study tour
b) the name of the instructor
c) the semester in which the course is being taken
d) the signature of the faculty mentor indicating whether the journal and reflective piece are being submitted to the faculty mentor as part of the course requirements for the study tour or whether the journal and reflective piece will be submitted directly to the Dean of the Core Curriculum and First Year Experience.

This form must be submitted to the Dean of the Core Curriculum and First Year Experience by the end of the first week of the semester in which the student is enrolled in CORE 350. Faculty instructors will designate deadlines for submission of work as appropriate when the reflective work is to be evaluated as part of the study tour. Students should follow the syllabus as provided by the individual instructor. If the students will be turning their work in to the Dean, the reflective piece must be submitted to the Dean of the Core Curriculum and First Year Experience by the end of the add/drop period of the semester during which the student completes the course or study tour. The Dean of the Core Curriculum and First Year Experience will work with the Core Curriculum Committee to evaluate these items for CORE350 credit.
6) Enrolling in CORE 350 concurrently with a 4-credit non-SMCM Study Tour (Section 06)
*Getting Approval
Students must get approval from the Dean of the Core Curriculum and First Year Experience for the study tour to meet the requirement. In order to do so, students will submit a form, available from the Registrar’s Office, and eventually online, on which they note
a) the name and course number of the study tour
b) the name of the instructor
c) the semester in which the course is being taken
d) the signature of the faculty mentor indicating whether the journal and reflective piece are being submitted to the faculty mentor as part of the course requirements for the study tour or whether the journal and reflective piece will be submitted directly to the Dean of the Core Curriculum and First Year Experience.

This form must be submitted to the Dean of the Core Curriculum and First Year Experience by the end of the first week of the semester in which the student is enrolled in CORE 350. The Dean will notify students about the status of their request by the end of the Wednesday before the add/drop period closes. 7) Enrolling in CORE 350 concurrently with an approved Service Learning Course (Section 07)

Students must get approval from the Dean of the Core Curriculum and First Year Experience for the service learning course to meet the requirement. In order to do so, students will submit a form, available from the Registrar’s Office, and eventually online, on which they note
a) the name and course number of the service learning course
b) the name of the instructor
c) the semester in which the course is being taken
d) the signature of the faculty mentor indicating whether the journal and reflective piece are being submitted to the faculty mentor as part of the course requirements for the service learning course or whether the journal and reflective piece will be submitted directly to the Dean of the Core Curriculum and First Year Experience.

This form must be submitted to the Dean of the Core Curriculum and First Year Experience by the end of the first week of the semester in which the student is enrolled in CORE 350. The Dean will notify students about the status of their request by the end of the Wednesday before the add/drop period closes. Students whose requests are not approved will automatically be dropped from CORE 350.07.

Faculty instructors will designate deadlines for submission of work as appropriate when the reflective work is to be evaluated as part of the service learning course. Students should follow the syllabus as provided by the individual instructor. If the students will be turning their work in to the Dean of the Core Curriculum and First Year Experience, the reflective piece must be submitted to the Dean of the Core Curriculum and First Year Experience by the end of the add/drop period of the semester during which the student completes the course or study tour. The Dean of the Core Curriculum and First Year Experience will work with the Core Curriculum Committee to evaluate these items for CORE350 credit.
8) Enrolling in CORE 350 concurrently with a non-credit Summer Experience (Section 08)
*Getting Approval
A student may seek permission from the Dean of the Core Curriculum and First Year Experience to take CORE350 while completing a non-credit summer internship, work experience, or research experience of at least 160 hours (the equivalent of a 4-credit internship of 10 hours per week for 16 weeks) in order to meet the goals of the Experiencing the Liberal Arts in the World requirement. In order to do so, that student must submit a specifically-designed “learning contract” to the Dean, available from the Registrar’s Office, that outlines the ways in which the work or research experience satisfies the goals and meets the learning outcomes of the “Liberal Arts in the World” element of the Core Curriculum. If not approved, the student may still have the option of completing a related independent study (see Section 01) in the following semester.

This form must be submitted to the Dean of the Core Curriculum and First Year Experience by the end of the spring semester examination period. Students whose requests are approved will be enrolled in CORE 350.08 for the summer term.
*Deadline for Submission of Work
Students will submit their CORE 350 journal and reflective piece to the Dean of the Core Curriculum and First Year Experience by the end of the first week of the fall semester following the non-credit summer internship, work experience, or research experience. The Dean of the Core Curriculum and First Year Experience will work with the Core Curriculum Committee to evaluate these items for CORE350 credit.
