Requirements for archaeology project

This field school affords students the unique opportunity to work on some of the worlds most well-known sites associated with the African Diaspora. Students will be participating in archaeological investigations geared toward understanding the unique impact of the Atlantic Trade and European/African interactions along the Gambia River. In particular, the publication of Alex Hayley’s Roots in 1976 popularized Juffure village and The Gambia as the homeland of many of the United States African Americans. This novel has lead to the creation of a World Heritage Area and biannual Roots Festival centered on the village and the Kinte family.
