2004 Summer Fieldschool Itinerary

Course Outline
The Gambia, West Africa Field Study Program 2004

When students arrive in The Gambia between Friday, May 21 and Sunday, May 23, they will be met at the airport by either the program director, Bill Roberts (telephone 220-780464), or driver Foday Darboe (telephone 220-913865).


 

  Week 1 – Orientation
 
 
  Monday Language and culture lessons, afternoon walking tour of Old Town Bakau (market, fishing port, Katchikally crocodile pool). Friendship Hotel.
 
 
  Tuesday Language and culture lessons, afternoon walking tour of Kanifing (University of The Gambia, YMCA, numerous schools), registration at U.S. embassy and safety and security briefing with Regional Security Officer. See Peace Corps office.
 
 
  Wednesday Language and culture lessons, afternoon walking tour of Banjul (National Museum, Arch 22, UTG Medical School, State House, Albert Market). Transportation to and from Banjul by 2 taxi passenger vans.
 
 
    Thursday Language and culture lessons, afternoon tour of Gambia College and Brikama market. Transportation to and from Brikama by 2 taxi passenger vans.
 
 
    Friday Language and culture lessons, afternoon walking tour of New Town Bakau, offices of the Daily Observer and Point Newspapers, Timbooktoo store, Leybato.
 
 
    Saturday Language and culture lessons. Free afternoon.  
    Sunday Free day.

Week 2 – Orientation continues.
 

 
    Monday Language and culture lessons, afternoon walking tour of Serekunda market and environs. Transportation to and from Serekunda by local taxi.
 
 
    Tuesday Language and culture lessons, afternoon walking tour of Senegambia/Kairaba tourist area, Bijilo nature forest. Transportation to and from Senegambia area by local taxi/director’s vehicle.
 
 
    Wednesday Visit to Abuko Nature Reserve, transportation by 2 taxi passenger vans. Afternoon language and culture lessons.
 
 
    Thursday Language and culture lessons, afternoon walking visit to Medical Research Council, Fajara.
 
 
    Friday Language and culture lessons, afternoon tour of Julbrew factory.
 
 
    Saturday Language and culture lessons. Optional afternoon trip along coastal road to seaside communities of Tanji, Sanyang, Tujureng, Gunjur, Kartong. Transportation by 2 taxi passenger vans.
 
 
    Sunday Free day.

Week 3 – Upcountry travel.
 

 
   


Monday


Travel by 25 passenger bus or 2 14 passenger taxi vans to Banjul, crossing the river by Gambia Ports Authority ferry to North Bank. Stop in Barra to visit Fort Bullen, the travel through Essau to Albreda, Juffure and James Island. Travel from Albreda to James Island in local canoes owned and operated by the NCAC (life vests in canoes). Overnight in Juffure.
 
 
    Tuesday Leave Juffure and travel through Kerewan, Farafenni (stop for lunch), Njau and on to Kuntaur where we will visit the stone circles at Wassu. Cross river to Janjanbureh island by GPA ferry. Overnight at Baobalong Lodge.
 
 
    Wednesday River trip with Janjanbureh camp boat (life vests in boat) in morning, afternoon tour of Janjanbureh town and meet with Peace Corps volunteers.
 
 
    Thursday Cross river by GPA ferry and travel through Brikama Ba, Kundang to Soma/Mansakonko. Visit with Peace Corps volunteers, overnight in Tendeba camp.
 
 
    Friday Travel to Tumani Tenda ecotourist camp. Meet village elders, canoe trip in mangrove, forest walk, visit school and community development projects.
 
 
    Saturday Return to Bakau.
 
 
    Sunday Free day.

Week 4 – Students begin research projects.
 

 
    Monday Student preparation for research.
 
 
    Tuesday Archaeologists depart for Albreda in 14 passenger van, via Banjul, cross river by GPA ferry, then on to Albreda.
 
 
    Wednesday Student research.  
    Thursday Student research.
 
 
    Friday Student research.
 
 
    Saturday Student research.  
    Sunday Free day.

    Thursday Depart for Senegal by 1 25 passenger bus or 2 14 passenger taxi vans. Travel to Banjul, cross river on GPA ferry, travel to Kaolack, Mbour and Dakar. Cross to Gorée Island on ferry, overnight in Keur Beer.
 
 
    Friday Visit West African Research Center and Universite Cheikh Anta Diop, Sumbudione tourist market, downtown Dakar? Return to Gorée for the evening.
 
 
    Saturday Explorations of Gorée island.
 
 
    Sunday Return to Bakau.
