The trip may cost more
or less depending on your flight and housing choices, whether or not you
already have a passport, your insurance coverage, and how much spending
money you plan to bring. Please remember that you are expected to pay
regular St. Mary’s tuition and fees (not included below), as you
will be earning 12 credits for your semester-long internship.

Payments
For your tuition payments, you will follow the same procedures as any
normal semester at SMCM. Flight, documents, and immunizations will be
paid individually by students as they make their own arrangements. The
SOS emergency coverage insurance fee should be given to the Office of
International Education before the final study abroad meeting, generally
at the pre-departure meeting. All other expenses are to be paid by the
individual while in country.
Financial Aid
Your general SMCM scholarships and federal financial aid can be used to
pay your tuition for the fall semester if you are earning 12 or more credits.
.
Scholarships
Currently in the works are two annual awards, with the mission to improve
U.S.-African relations on a one-to-one basis. If these scholarships are
established, awards will be presented to two promising teacher candidates
each year who plan to participate in The Gambia Teacher Internship. Each
award is accompanied with a stipend to cover airfare and/or other trip
expenses.
Student teachers are also eligible to apply for some selective awards;
make inquiries with the Office of International Education and/or local
organizations such as the Rotary, Kiwanis, and Optimists Clubs.
