The Gambian Experience Teacher Internship

 


Program Itinerary

February-April before internship Read internship descriptions, talk with former participants, discuss options with advisor, fill out applications, complete necessary requirements, obtain/renew passport if necessary
March (suggested) before internship Register for necessary classes, discuss independent study and Saint Mary’s Project ideas with advisor
May-August Make appointments for yellow fever shot, obtain anti-malarial medication, book flight, read handbooks and culture notes, apply for Visa, register for classes / independent study if not already done so
August-September Student teaching / participation in Maryland schools, attending seminars, completing portfolio, make contacts with schools / professionals in the Gambia to introduce yourself, pay travel insurance fees and attend pre-departure meetings (Office of International Ed.), discuss housing options, obtain Visa if not already done so
Early October Confirm flights and housing arrangements, obtain items on packing list, make photocopies of documents such as passport, insurance card, Visa, purchase small silifano novelty gifts for host family and school, complete and turn in all assignments for seminar and other courses (or arrange to take an incomplete)
Mid-October (fall break) Departure, one-week language and culture orientation
Late October-mid December Volunteer teaching internship (individual schedules will be arranged on-site), weekly language an culture classes
Mid-December Final exams (secondary), departure (stay can be extended)

January-February after internship

Completion of seminar / other course requirements, exit interview (certification candidates), and presentation of experience to future candidates.
