Vaccine Information

To assure effective protection from the vaccinations, it is wise to begin scheduling your appointments at least a month before travel. Some vaccinations take 7-10 days before they make you immune to the illness; some require more than one visit, and some cannot be taken at the same time. Consult your doctor or travel clinic for more detailed information about a suitable immunization schedule based on your dates of travel. Below is a list recommended immunization and clinics in the SMCM area. Many of these places can also prescribe you the appropriate medication for malaria prevention (for more information on Malaria click here).

Required vaccinations:

  • Yellow fever--It costs approximately $75 and you must have proof of this vaccination on a yellow International Certificate of Immunization card.

Recommended vaccinations (by the CDC)

  • Hepatitis A--It costs approximately %70 and you require only one dose prior to visiting the Gambia.
  • Typhoid--It costs approximately $58.
  • Meningococcal meningitis--it costs approximately $85 and its typically required for college students.
  • Rabies--it costs approximately $128 and recommended for individuals likely to  come in contact with animals.
  • Tuberculin--it costs approximately $20 and is given prior to travel and then 3-6 months after travel.
  • Tetanus/diphtheria--it costs approximately $50 and is recommended for travelers.
