St. Mary's College of Maryland works to build relationships with businesses and foundations to support mutual interests on the campus and in the community. Foundations and corporations fund many of the same programs that interest our individual donors, such as scholarships, building construction, special academic projects, research studies and internship stipends.
Naming opportunities are an excellent way to support an area of interest at St. Mary's while receiving media coverage and publicity and forging a strong partnership with the college. Naming opportunities include spaces in the Athletic and Recreation Center, Goodpaster Hall (the first fully "green" building on campus), and the River Center (which was dedicated in December 2008).
Some of our ongoing initiatives are outlined below, but they are only a sampling. I look forward to talking with you about innovative ideas to help your company or foundation build lasting ties with the college.

Athletic Sponsorships
The home of St. Mary's College of Maryland Seahawks is the Athletic and Recreation Center complex, the most heavily trafficked facility on campus. It features a 1,200-seat arena for basketball and volleyball contests and an aquatic center with an Olympic-sized pool. In addition to college events, the complex hosts numerous community sports programs, swim meets and special events throughout the year. By becoming a Seahawks sponsor, you'll be reaching a targeted audience of some of the most active, affluent and educated people in Maryland. See Athletics and Recreation Endowment.
Center for the Study of Democracy
This joint initiative of the college and Historic St. Mary's City explores contemporary and historical issues in democracy. Its many activities include public lecture and events, visiting scholars, original research, international student exchanges, civic engagement and internships and an annual conference on defense issues. This year, through a generous grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the center is holding a symposium on democracy in old and new Europe.
Other major donors to the center include the Bauman Foundation, the Chaney Foundation, Lockheed Martin Corporation, the Middendorf Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Westport Fund. See the Center for the Study of Democracy Website.
Computer Science Co-op
Several southern Maryland businesses have teamed with St. Mary's College to create a computer science internship program that benefits both students and local businesses.

Shared Advantage Program
When you do business with a SAP member, the St. Mary's College of Maryland Foundation receives a contribution, and you have the comfort of knowing that the business person you are working with has a unique knowledge of St. Mary's and the local community. For a list of members, see Shared Advantage Members.
SlackWater
The SlackWater Center studies the Chesapeake region's changing communities. It publishes the popular SlackWater Journal, which documents issues and places of regional importance. Issues have featured Cedar Point, St. George Island, and the rural legacies of farming (especially tobacco) and oyster harvesting in Southern Maryland. SlackWater has received generous support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. See the SlackWater Website.
WiSH Summer Camp
The WiSH (Women in Science House) Summer Science Camp for girls encourages local young women to study science through a week-long science camp that is free to all participants. By fostering the science education of middle-school girls, the program hopes to build the foundation for their future success in careers within the St. Mary's technology corridor and beyond. Support provided by the American Association of University Women, Boeing, CSC, J.F. Taylor, and SMECO.
