"St. Mary's is the perfect combination of all the things that I hold dear: the school provides a serious and stringent academic program coupled with a down-to-earth student body. Simply put, no other school could provide the complete package that I was searching for and found at SMCM."
Like many students, Chris felt an immediate connection to the school. "St. Mary's became home faster than I could have possibly imagined; I was surrounded by pleasant and positive people. By November, I could not imagine myself at any other school. At the end of my first semester, I was pleased to find that I had made the Dean's List and decided to pursue a degree in philosophy while still considering a second major in public policy. Life was good."
By February, however, Chris's life had been turned upside down. A serious illness kept Chris out of school for three weeks and he was busy catching up on school work for some time after that. Just a few weeks later, Chris learned that his father had been in a life-threatening car accident that rendered him permanently disabled. "I felt very helpless, incessantly worrying and knowing there was nothing I could do to help my dad."
“Being from out of state, St. Mary’s was not the cheapest option for me,” Josh explains. “I earned some scholarships and had enough need-based grants to make it affordable. I also had various jobs during my first two years, working 10-20 hours per week to pay for books and the cost of living. However, after my sophomore year, a lot of federal resources were reallocated and my family no longer qualified for a large portion of our financial aid package.”
“A lot of good stuff happened to me while I was at St. Mary's - they allowed me to grow as a person."

Many students have cobbled together a package of scholarships, grants, loans, and jobs in order to attend St. Mary's. But, this year, given the strains on the U.S. economy, we are seeing an increase in the number of families who are seeking aid for the first time because of lost jobs, medical emergencies, home foreclosures, and the cumulative cost of education.
The College's Foundation and the Office of Financial Aid have joined forces in the creation of The Emergency Assistance Fund. This new fund will provide emergency assistance to students who have a sudden, drastic change in their financial situation.
Your gift to this fund goes directly to students struggling to complete their St. Mary's education.
Each year, through the generosity of over 1200 donors, the SMCM Foundation is able to award
nearly $1 million in scholarships to St. Mary's students. Please help us continue this tradition.

St. Mary's College of Maryland believes that qualified students should have an opportunity for a College education. While the primary responsibility for paying college costs rests with a student's family, the College recognizes that students and their families may not always be able to fund the full cost of a college education. The General Scholarship Fund provides financial aid to bridge the gap between family resources and the cost of attending St. Mary's.
