Emily Rebecca Cramer didn’t want to be a biology major when she first came to St. Mary’s. Her sister, a senior at the College, already was majoring in it. But, when you get excited about moss growing on a wall, you realize you may need to change your mind.
“It wasn’t until halfway through my freshman year that I was convinced I should do biology,” said Emily, or Becky as she is known. “I got excited showing my mother the sporophyte generation of some moss growing on a wall. If I could get excited about alternation of generations (the life cycle of plants), what else was I to do? Since then, I have turned into one of the biggest biology dorks ever -- and I say that with pride,” she finishes.

"I can easily and honestly praise St. Mary's for combining the in-depth research I’m able to do in my major with the chance to participate in other activities which have nothing to do with my major but nonetheless interest me greatly.”
“I am so proud of the 'small girls' college' that grew up to be a place that has reached the attention of the country. It has been such a pleasure to watch the college grow...and it has preserved the friendliness and spirit that was so special to us in the past."

Many students have cobbled together a package of scholarships, grants, loans, and jobs in order to attend St. Mary's. But, this year, given the strains on the U.S. economy, we are seeing an increase in the number of families who are seeking aid for the first time because of lost jobs, medical emergencies, home foreclosures, and the cumulative cost of education.
The College's Foundation and the Office of Financial Aid have joined forces in the creation of The Emergency Assistance Fund. This new fund will provide emergency assistance to students who have a sudden, drastic change in their financial situation.
Your gift to this fund goes directly to students struggling to complete their St. Mary's education.
Each year, through the generosity of over 1200 donors, the SMCM Foundation is able to award
nearly $1 million in scholarships to St. Mary's students. Please help us continue this tradition.

Thank you for your investment in our students.
