Theresa Tenaglia '08, left, receives congratulations and her award from Bill Sturgis, right, regional president of PNC Bank. Torry Meringolo, center, vice president for the SMCM Office of Development, looks on.
St. Mary's students are taking their art to the community.
For the past three years, St. Mary's students have gotten the chance to showcase their art at the PNC Bank in Leonardtown and to vie for the opportunity to win the Joseph Marion Gough, Jr. Excellence in Art Award. This year, eight students were invited to exhibit their work at the bank.
The award was established to honor the memory and community service of Mr. Gough, a longtime president of the First National Bank of St. Mary’s (now PNC Bank), a community leader, art lover, and fervent supporter of St. Mary’s College of Maryland.
"I was very excited because, at the time, my need for financial assistance had largely increased after an expected scholarship from the state fell through."

“Thank you for believing in St. Mary’s and its students. Thank you for giving students like myself, the opportunity to be more than we ever thought possible."

The 2008 Scholarship & Awards Luncheon

Nezia Munezero '08 thanks donors for their support of St. Mary's.
The two speakers for the event – Gail Harmon, a trustee of the College and donor to the Baltimore Scholarship Program, and Nezia Munezero, a member of the Class of 2008 who has lived most of her life in two refugee camps – spoke of the importance of education in each of their lives and the necessity of having access to quality education.
The SMCM Foundation provides nearly $1 million in scholarship support to St. Mary’s students each year. The luncheon was established in the wake of the College’s Heritage Campaign as a way to say thank you to donors and to bring awareness to the College’s mission of enhancing accessibility, affordability, and diversity. The Campaign raised almost $12 million for scholarships and created 44 new funds and awards, and, today, over 1200 donors continue to make the dream of a college education possible for our students.
