The River Center

The waterfront is St. Mary's. We use it for recreation, for sport, and for learning. It serves as an outdoor living room for students -when the weather is nice, as many as 200 students a day use the area recreationally.

The waterfront also serves as a home for many community programs: the Governor's Cup Yacht Race, Special Olympics training, and the Brendan Junior Sailing Program for youth with learning differences. Then there's our homecoming event - the Cardboard Boat Race, which drew an estimated 500 spectators this year.

To meet the needs of our ever-growing programs for the students and the community, the College is building the River Center -- really two buildings: the Rowing Center and the main building - which will be the first privately-funded facilities on campus.

The Rowing Center (2,700 gross square feet) will house crew shells (boats), kayaks, and other recreational equipment. The River Center (11,697 gross square feet) will support academic programs with a classroom, a seminar room, and lab for estuarine studies; sailing programs with a team room and expanded storage space; and general recreation with a large multipurpose room/lounge, and a large second-floor deck. Bathrooms and showers will also be inside.
