The Human Studies major is a multi-disciplinary major that focuses on the study of the individual in social context.   The objectives of the Human Studies major are to enable students to understand the psychological, social, and cultural forces that affect the lives of individuals and the communities in which they live, and to encourage integration of this knowledge through interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary study.  

Thus, the mission of the Human Studies major is to provide students with the opportunity to learn about:

• Developmental processes of the individual
• How community and social forces and group membership influence human behavior

And to develop the following skills:

• Written and oral fluency
• Qualitative and quantitative research methodologies
• Information literacy

Finally, Human Studies majors are expected to pursue a depth of study in psychology, educational studies, anthropology, sociology or a combination of these disciplines, and to apply their knowledge and skills through a culminating project and through community service.
