Visiting Assistant Professor of English
The Department of English at St. Mary’s College of Maryland is accepting applications for a full-time, two-year position as Visiting Assistant Professor of English, to begin August 1, 2018. Candidates will teach a 3-3 load and should expect to offer a range of courses at all levels of the curriculum. Candidates should have expertise in British literature of the long 18th century; particular area of focus within this timeframe is open. We are particularly interested, however, in applicants whose research and teaching interests consider the origins of the Enlightenment and their impact on transatlantic circulations of persons, ideas, texts, and capital. Secondary expertise in postcolonial literature and/or colonial America is desirable; candidates whose research complements our geographic location would benefit from our proximity to Historic St. Mary’s City and other historic sites and museums. The successful candidate will have experience incorporating digital humanities into undergraduate coursework.

Designated Maryland's public honors college, St. Mary’s has highly selective admissions policies, academically talented students, and a rigorous curriculum; we offer a small college experience similar to that found at exceptional private colleges. St. Mary’s faculty benefit from a comprehensive program of support for scholarship, research, and curriculum development. The quality of life is enhanced by the recreational opportunities of the Chesapeake region and by our proximity to Washington, D.C. and Baltimore.
Candidates should hold a PhD in English at the time of appointment; excellence in undergraduate teaching, including support for undergraduate research and writing, is expected.
Application materials should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae (including e-mail address), statement of teaching philosophy (which briefly addresses how the applicant’s teaching at the College will contribute to a culture of inclusion and campus diversity), evidence of teaching effectiveness (if available), and three letters of recommendation.
