St. Mary's Projeect in Human Studies
The Coordinating Committee approved the following guidelines for St. Mary's Projects in Human Studies in June of 2005. Students majoring in Human Studies must complete one of the following 8-credit options for a senior experience:
Either an 8-credit SMP, with significant human studies content (usually HMST 493-494), or HMST 490 (Senior Seminar in Human Studies), plus one additional upper-level course in either Psychology, Educational Studies, or Sociology/Anthropology. Whichever option is elected, the student must earn a grade of C- or better. [Note: These two options apply to students under the 2005-06 catalog and later. Students under earlier catalogs should consult their catalog for the senior experience requirements they must fulfill. Regardless of catalog, however, the following guidelines for St. Mary's Projects in Human Studies apply.]
General Guidelines for St. Mary's Projects in Human Studies
I. Student Major Requirements Related to SMPs in HMST
A. SMPs for HMST Majors
Human Studies majors may conduct their projects within the discipline of Human Studies or in another discipline, including in established cross-disciplinary programs, provided they have completed sufficient required coursework in the relevant discipline(s) and the SMP has significant human studies content.
They should submit to the Coordinator of the Human Studies major a Declaration Form outlining their intention for the SMP, including a brief description of the project and the mentor who will work with them on the project. (A copy of the Declaration Form is included in these Guidelines.)
B. Non-HMST-Majors who wish to do SMPs in HMST
Students who are not majoring or double-majoring in HMST must meet the following requirements for electing an SMP in HMST:
a. Complete one of the introductory-level courses (PSYC 101 or SOAN 101) with a C- or better.
b. Complete one of the methods courses (HMST 201, PSYC 203, SOAN 385) with a C- or better.
c. Submit a Declaration Form for an SMP in HMST for approval by the HMST Coordinator.
C. Double-majors in HMST and another discipline
Double majors in HMST and another discipline must fulfill a senior experience, which may be either an SMP or Senior Seminar. They may conduct their projects within the discipline of Human Studies or in another discipline, including in established cross-disciplinary programs, provided they have completed sufficient required coursework in the relevant discipline(s), and provided the SMP includes significant human studies content -- that is, significant content from the perspective of either psychology, educational studies, sociology, or anthropology, or a combination of these disciplines. If the SMP does not include significant Human Studies content, it will not satisfy the senior experience in HMST. In these cases the student must also complete the Senior Seminar in HMST, but will not be required to take the additional upper-level course in psychology, educational studies, sociology, or anthropology
