Fudan University
Fudan University, located in the cosmopolitan city of Shanghai, is one of China's most prestigious learning institutions. Founded in 1905, Fudan is under the direct jurisdiction of the State Ministry of Education. Fudan University and Shanghai Medical University merged into a new Fudan University in April 2000. Fudan University has established exchange relationships with more than 200 universities and research institutions in about 30 countries and regions.
Academics at Fudan
St. Mary's students study intensive Chinese language full-time at Fudan University. Upon arrival, you'll take a placement test to determine your level of Chinese-language proficiency, and then you'll be assigned to appropriate courses in Chinese language. The courses offered are:
- Chinese Language as Grammar
- Chinese Language as Reading
- Oral Chinese
- Translation
- Composition
- Selected Newspaper Readings
- Language Laboratory Comprehension
Those students who demonstrate a high level of Chinese-language proficiency on the placement test may proceed directly into concentrations in Chinese literature, history, laws, philosophy, economics or other fields.
New in academic year 2011-12 is Fudan's English language track. Acceptances into this track will be limited to two to three SMCM students per semester.
It is important to note that at Fudan, academic success is based solely on how well students do on exams. The final exam carries great weight and class attendance is a major factor. If a student misses more than a third of classes, the final exam grade will not count and the student will not pass.
Academic Credit for Coursework Abroad
Credits earned abroad will count toward your degree at St. Mary's, often fulfilling Core Curriculum, major requirements, or elective credit. Each course is evaluated for its equivalency at St. Mary's.
More information about how to ensure credits earned abroad transfer successfully to St. Mary's is available in the College catalog under Academic Policies and on the Pre-departure Blackboard course.
