Why Fudan?

In the words of SMCM student Carmen Tong

Why did you choose to study at Fudan?

I wanted to improve my Mandarin, of course! I also had never been to mainland China, and as an ABC (American-born Chinese), I'd always wanted to pay my respects to the motherland and learn to appreciate it. However, the sole reason I was even able to go was Dr. David Kung. Since I am not only a Chinese major, but a math major as well, I needed to take either Analysis I or Algebra I in order to keep us with my math courses. Fudan didn't offer math courses in English, but fortunately, Dr. Kung was able to teach me Analysis I as an independent study, so that I could join Analysis II when I came back to St. Mary's in the spring. It worked out perfectly!

What did you experience there that you might not experience elsewhere?

The people, the city, the amazing food.... The places I visited (Beijing, Nanjing, Hong Kong) were also unforgettable and beautiful.

Why should other students study abroad?

It opens your eyes to another culture totally different from yours with an up-close, first-hand experience of the culture and the language. Best of all, you get to meet many different people from all around the world and develop lasting friendships you never would've been able to make otherwise.

Why should other students choose Fudan University and study in Shanghai, China?

It is a life-changing experience -- you learn so much and see so many great things!
