Academics in Buenos Aires, Argentina
The academic program in Buenos Aires is custom-designed for St. Mary's students by St. Mary's faculty. Students may study in Buenos Aires for a semester or an academic year, upon request. The set of courses is designed for both non-majors with only one year of Spanish as well as for students with advanced skills in the language. Applicants will need to complete ILCS102 or ILCS110 by the end of the semester prior to their participation in the program. The program combines coursework with local and regional excursions as well as meaningful contact with Argentines through home-stays with families and volunteer or internship experiences.
There are two tracks available. In the advanced track, all courses are in Spanish. In the intermediate track, the central history and culture seminar can be taught in English, and students may complete the research project in some or mostly English.
The academic credits can apply to the following elements of the core curriculum: the four liberal arts skills, experiencing the liberal arts in the world, international languages, humanistic foundations, social sciences, and cultural perspectives. Depending on a student's research project or volunteer experience, there could potentially be further flexibility in the credits' disciplinary focus.
Courses will be taught by St. Mary's or hand-selected international faculty and administered through our Argentine partner institution Culturas del Sur, directed by Claudia Oxman. To read more about Culturas del Sur in Spanish, visit http://www.culturasdelsur.org/index.html. Culturas del Sur's director also founded and is editorial director of Ediciones Voces del Sur, the only publisher in Argentina dedicated to language teaching and materials, with a focus on Spanish as a foreign language. She also created and directed the Center for Foreign Languages at the School of Social Sciences and the Department of International Students at the University Center for Languages at the University of Buenos Aires.
