Why Buenos Aires?
The Argentina program is a semester of study accessible and productive to both non-majors with only one year of Spanish and students with advanced skills in the language.
The goals of the program are for students to:
- improve linguistic proficiency in Spanish;
- understand Argentine society and culture in relation to its own history, to the rest of Latin America, and to the United States;
- develop research skills; and
- have meaningful contact with Argentines through home stays with families and volunteer work through the Experiential Learning component.
The program's principal location is the capital, Buenos Aires, on the Atlantic coast, with one week spent in the city of Salta.
Buenos Aires is a culturally vibrant, metropolitan city with a huge network of urban busses and a metro system whose first line was inaugurated in 1913. There are about 3 million inhabitants of central Buenos Aires and a total of 13 million in the metropolitan area.
Salta is in northwest Argentina and is culturally part of the Andean region. It is an excellent starting point to learn about Argentina's indigenous population.
