Why Chiang Mai?

Why did you choose to study at Payap University in Chiang Mai?

I wanted to go abroad; going abroad to Australia was too expensive...so Thailand seemed like the next best bet. I am a biology major, so it did not get me any [bio] credits that helped me, but it turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life.--Daniel Schindel, former SMCM exchange student

What did you experience there that you might not experience elsewhere?

Things have been going great! Super busy! This past weekend we had a community service day at...a shelter NGO for girls who were at risk for going into the sex industry. It was a great program....I'm hoping to find an NGO like it closer to Chiang Mai that might be bikeable to volunteer more regularly. --Sam DiDonato, on exchange during fall 2011

I had a blast in Mae Chaem [a Thai village where SMCM students spent six days in a home-stay with local rice farmers] with my family there, and I can't wait to go back sometime later in the semester to visit. Chiang Mai is a great city too--all kinds of stuff to do....--Berrett Brand, on exchange during fall 2011

Why should other students choose Payap University and study in Chiang Mai, Thailand?

Living in a country that is around 95% Buddhist really opened my eyes to a different way of looking at the world that would have been very hard to come by in the United States. I have taken this new perspective and integrated it into my daily life. The globalization course offered a way to explore the recent history of the country and really the rest of the world too. This course combined with Cultural Foundations (a required course) really gets you immersed in the history of Thailand and the surrounding area. You begin to learn a culture that is deeply caring and deeply sensitive. Some people might find it hard to get into the flow of it, but if you give it a chance and genuinely try, everyone benefits and everyone is changed for the better because of it. I highly recommend going to Thailand.--Daniel Schindel
