Why Oxford?

In the words of SMCM student Claire Stein

Why did you choose to study at the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies (CMRS) in Oxford?

I chose Oxford because I always wanted to go back to Great Britain after my first trip there in eleventh grade. I also chose it because, as an English major, what better place to study English?

What did you experience there that you might not experience elsewhere?

As an academic experience, Oxford was unforgettable. The professors, the lectures, the trips, the culture all gave me a perspective on British history and culture that could never be gleaned from a textbook. By studying where our government and culture came from, I developed a better appreciation for both nations.

Why should other students study abroad?

Studying abroad gives you a chance to learn about yourself in unexpected ways. The people you meet and the things you see will stick with you the rest of your life. There's something about living in another country, calling it "home" for three months that's truly eye-opening. You can't know another country until you live there.

Why should other students choose St. Mary's Signature Semester at CMRS and study in Oxford?

I recommend Oxford for anyone with an appreciation for British history, literature, culture, or architecture. The academics are unmatched -- it's Oxford for crying out loud!!
