Student Life

Living and Eating at CMRS

Forty students live in St. Michael's Hall in central Oxford in double occupancy rooms. Each room has a bed, wardrobe, chest, desk or table, desk lamp, chair, and linens. Students share hallway bathrooms. Up to ten additional students will reside in student lodgings or private homes within a mile or two of central Oxford.

St Michael's Hall offers a lecture hall; seminar and tutorial rooms; library; rare book room; computer room; studio for sculpture and stained glass; accommodation for 40 students; Common Room with television and video; a fully-equipped student kitchen and dining room. The Common Room is the social center for CMRS students.

CMRS students may pay for meals in the Dining Hall at Keble College throughout each semester. Breakfast, lunch and dinner (brunch and dinner only on Saturdays and Sundays) are served. Keble College also has its own cafe. As there is no board plan with Keble College, students are free to eat wherever they like--in town, at Keble, or in the St. Michael's Hall kitchen.

Student Activities

The social atmosphere at Keble College is relaxed...but students interested in music, drama or sports will find plenty to do. Keble has a strong music tradition and facilities to match.

Staying Fit

As one of the larger Oxford colleges, Keble is active and successful in most inter-collegiate sports. A modern, fully equipped gym is open each day of the term. There are student-run clubs in all major University sports, offering teams at all levels of ability and commitment.

Both the city of Oxford and Oxford University offer facilities for sports, fitness, and recreation.

University Societies

The university-wide range of clubs and societies is impressive, and covers music, drama, politics, religion, sport, and many other subject areas and fields of interest. Membership of most clubs is relatively cheap and, study-time permitting, can be an excellent way of meeting people outside CMRS and Keble College. A notable resource is the Oxford Union Society, a private members' club situated very near to St. Michael's Hall. Membership includes cafeteria/restaurant facilities, a bar, and a sizeable lending library. As a debating society, it enjoys unparalleled worldwide prestige. Speaker meetings and other events occur daily in term.

Computer and IT Center

CMRS has a networked AppleMac computing system with permanent access to the Internet. The Computer Room, open 24 hours a day, has AppleMacs and a cross-platform printer for general use. Hardware and software are upgraded and expanded regularly. There are ethernet points in teaching rooms and every study-bedroom in St Michael's Hall, and most of the building is covered by wireless networks. Students are encouraged to bring their own laptops.
