Advising and Study Abroad

Why study abroad?

St. Mary's is committed to developing knowledge, skills, and attitudes in our graduates that deepen their global awareness and engagement within the framework of the College's commitment to academic excellence.

The Core Curriculum and ELAW

Study abroad is one way that students can satisfy Experiencing the Liberal Arts in the World (ELAW) of the Core Curriculum, which encourages students to reflect upon and apply their ideas and knowledge outside the classroom. Study abroad can also foster students' sense of social and civic responsibility as well as understanding of fundamental issues of the 21st centurey as they prepare to participate ethically and intelligently as citizens of the global community.

Students will enroll in their study abroad program and CORE350 (a zero-credit course) concurrently.  Experiencing the Liberal Arts in the World Learning Contracts must be submitted to the Dean of the Core Curriculum by the end of the first week of the Add/Drop period at the beginning of each semester.

Advising for First Steps to Study Abroad

Students who are thinking about or planning to study abroad will go through a two-phase process: an application phase and a pre-departure phase. We recommend that students start by visiting our First Steps to Study Abroad web page that guides them through the process and provides information on a variety of pre-departure topics of interest.

You'll want to know that both program and scholarship application forms are due to the Office of International Education by:

  • October 15 for winter break, spring break, or spring semester study abroad
  • March 1 for fall semester or academic year study abroad

Pre-departure resources for students are:

  • First Steps brochure
  • Information Sessions during the first week of every month, plus IE Chats for program-specific information and IE Teas ;to connect outbound with program alumni (see IE Events Calendar to left for dates and times)
  • Advising with St. Mary's International Education staff
  • Mandatory pre-departure meetings
  • Pre-departure materials from partner institutions abroad
  • Center for Global Education's Study Abroad Student Handbook
