Sexual Assault: Minimizing the Risk
Minimizing the Risk of Sexual Assault
Communicate clearly what you want. Have a straight-forward conversation to make your limits known before you get into a sexual situation. You always have the right to say "no."
Beware of alcohol and other drugs-your use as well as the other person's. Your good judgment and common-sense are your best defense.
Watch your drink regardless of how safe you feel.
Avoid isolated or secluded places like deserted academic buildings.
Have a transportation plan. Avoid walking alone after dark.
Walk in well-lit areas and carry yourself with an air of confidence.
While it is no guarantee, know your guests and dates.
Keep windows and doors locked for your room and vehicle.
If you are in an uncomfortable situation, do not hesitate to fight. A physical response and the use of household items as weapons may save you from becoming a victim.
Reducing the Risk of Being Accused of Assault
Don't make assumptions about what the other person wants. Ask for clarification if you feel confused or uncertain.
Separate desire from action. Every action carries a consequence so recognize your desires and control your actions.
Having sexual contact with someone who is incapable of giving consent is a CRIME. If you have sex with someone who is drugged, drunk, passed out, incapable of giving consent or unaware of what is happening, you are guilty of rape.
Intoxication is not an excuse. You are responsible for your actions whether you are sober or not.
