USMAI Borrowing

Materials borrowed from other USMAI institutions are subject to the loan periods and fine rates of the owning library, not SMCM's library.

Materials borrowed from other USMAI libraries may be returned at any USMAI library and are considered returned at that time-they are taken out of the patron's record before they are shipped back to their owning institution.

Renewals may be done online just as with SMCM materials. Note possible varying due dates among libraries (though most are 28 days for undergrads).

Computer Use

Students have access to computers located in workstations on first floor and also on the second floor bridge at the top of the stairs. Some workstations only have Internet access, but most have Internet, Microsoft Office and other licensed applications. Login is the student's Username (first part of SMCM email address) and a student-set password.

The library has 12 laptops (also headphones, flash drives, and Ethernet cords) that may be borrowed by students for 3 hours. Printing is not possible from laptops and work must be saved to the student's network drive, emailed, or saved to a flash drive. One renewal is permitted and the laptop may be used outside the building.

Printing

Students may print from these stations. Each student begins the semester with $20 in a pay-for-print account. The cost of computer print jobs is automatically deducted from this account. When the $20 is depleted, students may add more at the ATM outside the Bookstore of the Campus Center.

Printing Problems - a guide

Photocopiers

Photocopiers are located on both floors of the library-on first floor by the windows and on second floor at the far end of the Periodicals collection. Copies can be made using either cash or student ID. Students must have funds in their debit accounts to use their cards for copying.

Fax Machine

The library does not have a fax machine for patron use. Students needing to use a fax machine should go to the Book Store.

Study Options

Tables
Comfortable chairs
Individual study carrels
Group study rooms

The four group study rooms are available on a first come-first served basis. However, we prefer that they be used by groups rather than individuals. They are not soundproofed, so please be considerate of others. Markers for the white board in each room may be borrowed at the Circulation Desk.

Meetings or other events for the Board Room on the second floor are scheduled through EMS (scheduling program) or by calling the Media Center Office Coordinator (240-895-4269).

Services for Students with Disabilities

The SMCM Library has a workstation available for students with documented disabilities. Students should see Dr. Nancy Danganan in the Office of Academic Services for additional information. Access to the workstation is restricted to students authorized by that office.

Members of the general public who would like to use the specialized software available should speak with a staff member at the Circulation Desk for access.

The workstation offers:

  • Adjustable workstation.
  • 22" monitor
  • hpScanjet scanner
  • Gateway computer
  • ZoomText Magnifier and Screen Reader
  • JAWS for Windows screen reader
  • Kurzweil 3000 for Windows
  • Trackball mouse
