Fall 2005

New Faculty in the Department

Dr. Sandy Ganzell, Assistant Professor of Mathematics

Sandy received his PhD at Rice University in 2000, he held postdoctoral research positions in both Psychology and Mathematics at Rice and then was a visiting professor at Pomona College for four year. Sandy's specialty is Knot theory, not “not theory”, but “knot theory” and four dimensional spaces.  Sandy was an All-American Gymnast.

Alex Meadows, Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics

Alex did his BA at Williams College, his PhD at Stanford, where he graduated in 2002. For the last three year Alex has been on a research and teaching NSF postdoctoral position at Cornell. Alex's specialty is Partial Differential Equations.

Summer 2005

The St. Mary's Mathematics and Computer Science department at St. Mary's is proud that ten Computer Science Majors and seven Mathematics majors have successfully applied to internships and are now working as interns.

Tenny, Brittany, Heather, and Kenny were MAA (Mathematics Association of America) summer interns doing undergraduate research at IUPUI (Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis).

Spring 2005

Many Mathematics and  CS students travelled to competitions and conferences . Funding for registration, travel and lodging came from the SGA, the MathCS Department and the St Mary's Math Foundation. On the right is a nice pic of the St. Mary's group at the MAA Spring Meeting in Charlottesville, VA.

Fall 2004

New Faculty in the Department

Dr. Katherine Socha, Assistant Professor of Mathematics

Katherine's current area of interest is the study of water waves, in the remarkably different shallow water and deep water regimes, through analysis of the differential equations that describe surface wave motion. Katherine received her BA at Reed College and her PhD at The University of Texas at Austin.


Summer 2004

The St. Mary's Mathematics and Computer Science department at St. Mary's is proud that eleven Computer Science Majors and eight Mathematics majors have successfully applied to internships and are now working as interns.

Spring 2004

Math Major Kristine Roinestad is SMCM's 2004 co-Valedictorian!

Three Graduating Math Seniors to continue on to Ph'D programs in Mathematics: Gwyneth Whieldon (Cornell); Jan Hilmar (Northeastern); and Kristine Roinestad (U of North Carolina at Chapel Hill).


MathCS Department sweeps an incredible number of College awards at the Convocation ceremony:
Ten mathematics and six CS students travelled to competitions and conferences in Phoenix, Nebraska, New York, Salisbury, and Baltimore. Funding for registration, travel and lodging came from the SGA, the MathCS Department and the St Mary's Math Foundation. Dr. David Kung Wins $5,000 Grant: After a national competition, mathematics professor Dr. David Kung won a $5,000 grant from from the Calculus Consortium for Higher Education to further his research in mathematics education.

Grants in the pipeline: The MathCS department are co-sponsers on four grants currently under review. The principal sponsers are NavAir $500,000; General Dynamics $10,000; EMA $30,000; HSMC $30,000.

Dr. Matthew Burke raises $10,000 for CS-Coop Program: Working closely with the Office of Development Matt brought four companies into the program for this Summer 2004. Each company contributed $2,500 to go toward student scholarships and also each company will employ one student this summer. Four other students will also be in the program this summer. Fall 2003

New Faculty in the Department

Susan Goldstine, Assistant Professor of Mathematics

Susan’s specialty is number theory and she is an active researcher. She is also a dedicated teacher of mathematics and has been involved with a special mathematics education program as a professor at Ohio State University. Susan has given enumerable presentations on a wide variety of subjects ranging from recreational mathematics to research seminars. Susan received her BA at Amherst College and her PhD at Harvard University.

Walter Carlip, Visiting Associate Professor of Mathematics

Walter’s specialties include graph theory, number theory, computer science and mathematical education. Walter received his BA at Harvard University and his PhD at the University of Chicago.

Spring 2003

Kristen Arrildt shatters school record in international Putnam exam with a score of 20 points! St Mary's Mathematics Foundation awards, each year, the highest scorer $10 per point. Kristen's award was $200! Other excellent scorers on this year's team were Kristine Roinestad, Andy Neal, and Jonathon Mulholland.

Board of Trustee Thomas Kreidler (a VP with Sun Microsystems) lectured to Simon Read's computer science class.

Alum Melissa Kemmer (an actuarial mathematician) lectured to Fozia Qazi's actuarial mathematics class.

New Faculty in the Department

The Mathematics and Computer Science Department at St. Mary's has recently added new members to the faculty. Three new professors have joined the department:

Virtual St. Mary's

Kevin Smith's SMP - a Virtual Tour of St. Mary's College - was one of the most challenging projects presented this May. A description of his work is now available on the webpage.

For everybody interested in mathematics, we now offer a link to MathSciNet, an online database of mathematical journal articles. 1,799 journals are covered, 194,423 articles online, and over 300,000 authors appear in MathSciNet's index.

Herbert Edelsbrunner to give Lecture and Fine Arts series of two talks on “3D Printers”, November 7th and 8th 2002

On November 7, 2002, Herbert Edelsbrunner will hold the first lecture of two talks on 3-D Printers. The second talk will be held November 8. For more information, including lecture time and location, please visit the Math Seminar Page.

Spring 2002

Espresso in the MathCS Lounge

There is a new easy to use espresso machine (and espresso, milk, cocoa, whipped cream, etc) in the MathCS Lounge. Everyone is welcome to visit the Lounge and have an espresso drink.

St. Mary's Students Visit Actuarial Seminar

On March 10, 2002, St. Mary's mathematics majors Brian Benjaminson and Shane Martin attended a workshop on the ACTEX, the Actuaries Exam. For more information on the exam, please see here.
