Madeleine Kreitzer

Madeline Moon Kreitzer died June 27, 2008, at Sunrise Senior Living Center in Annapolis at age 88. She was a chemistry lab instructor at St. Mary's for over 15 years, retiring in 1986. David Burdette '76, citing her as an "inspirational chemistry lab instructor, mentor and friend," named a chemistry lab in Goodpaster Hall in her honor in 2007, and spoke at her funeral. She is survived by her seven children, 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Helen Marie Paradis died April 22, 2008, at age 85. She married John Paradis in 1946 and they moved to St. Mary's County in 1948. She was an avid sailor and taught sailing at St. Mary's from 1967 to 1972. A room in the College's new sailing center will be named in her honor.

Louise Farmer Birckner '43 died August 7, 2008, at age 85. She is survived by her husband
Carl, sons Eric and Preston, extended family and friends.

Elaine Leach Kuhl '48 died May 22, 2008, at age 80 in Detroit from acute leukemia.

Sally Turner Benner '49 died May 10, 2008.

Betty Gitt

Betty Resh Gitt '51 died May 14, 2008, at age 75. She was the wife of the late John Slagle Gitt, and is survived by children Deborah Gitt Stoll, Rebecca Diane Field, Martha Jeanne Gitt, and Sarah Louise Coughenour; brother, George Daniel Resh, Jr. and sister, Lou Ann Harman; grandchildren Adam George and Rachel Adelaide Stoll, Samuel Breckenridge Field, Charles Walker Field, Jr., Rose Rachor, Christine, Rebecca and Sandra Coughenour; and three greatgrandchildren.

Martha Jane Orme Pearsall '60 died May 15, 2008, at age 67. She was married to Nelson Joseph Pearsall III, for 33 years. They loved to travel from Alaska to Mexico, as well as the back roads of Caroline County. They hand-built a cabin in Goldsboro after buying and restoring The Hobbs Store in Hobbs. For many years, Martha was a devoted caregiver at the Caroline Center and the Benedictine School in Ridgely. She was also a talented artist and avid gardener. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three children, a son-in-law, a daughter-in-law, nine grandchildren, and her two sisters, Suzanne Orme Dembowski '62 and her husband, Ulrich, and Linda Orme Fellows and her husband, Jeff.

Karen Smith

Karen Borger Smith '85 died July 19, 2008, after a battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband, Frank, and their three children, Rachel (13), Mark (9), and Megan (7). A note from Laurel Tringali Eierman '84 says, "Karen was one of my dearest friends. She was a hall mate on first left Queen Anne, and we stayed in close contact over the years. She was also close with Joan Race '84, Michelle Paris '85 and Gabe Leenas Luke '84. The four of us attended Reunion weekends together over the years, and met frequently for lunch and/or dinner. She will be sorely missed."

Alethea Redmond, a longtime secretary at St. Mary's, died August 16, 2008. She was pre-deceased by her husband, James Redmond, longtime chief custodian at the College. They both worked at St. Mary's until they retired. Their daughter, Gayle Redmond Hancock, graduated in 1966. When Gayle attended, the Redmonds lived on campus in the "White House." Their grandson, Jason Redmond, worked on the College's landscaping crew.
