TWO ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS
Nicole Carlozo ’08 is this year’s recipient of the Alumni Association’s post-graduate scholarship. As an undergraduate, Nicole double-majored in biology and English and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. After graduating from St. Mary’s, she became a fish and invertebrate ecology laboratory intern for the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Edgewater, Maryland. There she worked on Chesapeake Bay-wide sampling of juvenile blue crabs, the blue crab tagging program, and blue crab stock enhancement projects. Nicole next worked as a national forest program intern at the Wilderness Society in Washington, D.C., tracking legislative and administrative actions affecting national forests and the national wilderness preservation system. Her most recent job was at the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Washington, D.C. as a program assistant for the Scientific Freedom Responsibility & Law Program. Nicole feels that scientific work by itself doesn’t implement change. To implement change, an understanding of policy, economics, and other social science fields is essential. She is now pursuing a master’s of environmental management with a concentration in coastal environmental management at Duke University Nicholas School of the Environment in Durham, North Carolina. She hopes to work for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and use her graduate degree to contribute to fisheries policy and coastal conservation.
Bryan McVae ’14 is this year’s recipient of the Alumni Legacy Scholarship which is awarded to a current student who is related to an alum of the College. Bridget McVae Johnson ’06 is Bryan’s sister. Bryan graduated from Broadneck High School in Annapolis as an AP Scholar with distinction and chose to attend St. Mary’s after visiting the campus with his sister. He feels a liberal arts education will enable him to become a well-rounded person, particularly in the field of economics and public policy. Bryan worked on a political campaign this year, served as a page for the 2010 Maryland General Assembly, and looks forward to being part of the Center for the Study of Democracy. Bridget describes him as someone with an inquisitive mind who has taken complete ownership of his education. Bryan took economic courses at his local community college when his high school didn’t offer any, and independently tackled Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations, because he was unwilling to simply accept others’ interpretation of the monumental text. Bryan is active in his church, organizing service projects, and enjoys backpacking and kayaking. The Alumni Legacy Scholarship was made possible this year by additional donors who gave to the Endowed Alumni Scholarship Fund.
