THE MUSIC MAJOR

The goal of this major is to provide the qualified student with a broad foundation of musical knowledge, coupled with a high level of academic performance skills. The major offers the following: a balance of music theory, music history and literature, and creative expression; applied instruction, both class and individual; performance opportunities, including choirs, chamber orchestra, and other ensembles; and musical composition.

Graduates of the music program have found success not only in graduate school but also in careers as professional performers, music teachers, instrumental technicians, and in other music-related fields, especially arts management. An important advantage to the study of music in this liberal arts curriculum is that it allows students the flexibility to pursue varied interests and to expand, rather than limit, their career options.

A student considering the possibility of a career in arts management, for instance, might take Introduction to Economics as a general education course, and choose electives in economics. Similarly, a student interested in musical computer applications might seek electives in programming and computer science. Music faculty members can recommend elective courses for such fields as music therapy, music law, and others.
