It was a wonderful weekend to celebrate the 2017 Governor’s Cup, with a passing weather front to the North presenting sailors with a strong and challenging Southerly wind and waves.
By race day, there were 112 registered boats for the 44th annual Gov Cup which had three courses to compete in: Annapolis, Potomac, and Southern. Come race time 108 boats were registered, 102 checked in to set-sail. Thirty of those boats withdrew due to the tough conditions.
The 72 boats that made it to St. Mary’s City accomplished the feat in rough and windy conditions, according to race officials. The significant average wave height was nearly three-feet and winds were 20 to 25 knots for most of the night.
Congratulations to all those who participated including all those who volunteered time to help out before, during and after the annual event.
