Press Release #11-009
The program will feature George Crumb's radiant "Eine Kleine Mitternachtmusik," a set of variations on Thelonious Monk's haunting tune "Round Midnight," and Salvatore Martirano's "Stuck on Stella," inspired by the 1940s pop standard, "Stella by Starlight." Also included are solo works by John Cage and Aaron Copland. Finally, Garth will be joined by young trumpet soloist Zachary Silberschlag in a performance of Alec Wilder's "Trumpet Sonata." Wilder wrote hit songs for Mabel Mercer and Peggy Lee during the '30s and '40s, and later participated in the Tidewater Festival at St. Mary's College.
Garth has achieved international distinction through her recordings and concert appearances in the U.S., Europe, and Asia, and is the recipient of a Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award for 2010.
St. Mary's College of Maryland, designated the Maryland state honors college in 1992, is ranked one of the best public liberal arts schools in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. More than 2,000 students attend the college, nestled on the St. Mary's River in Southern Maryland.
