Todd Eberly, political science assistant professor and interim director of the Center for the Study of Democracy at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, was named one of the top political influencers for the State of Maryland in the May issue of Campaigns & Elections magazine. He is one of only two professors to make the list and is from the only political science department mentioned.

“Eberly is part of one of the most influential political science departments in the state,” the magazine reports. “He is often quoted in the media about the challenges faced by Republicans in a state dominated by Democrats.” Eberly has appeared in the pages of the Washington Post, the Baltimore Sun, and the Maryland Gazette of Business and Politics and has been heard on Maryland Public Radio, WTOP, and WMAL.

Eberly also is coordinator of the college’s Public Policy Studies program and is the creator of the FreeStater blog, part of the Washington Post blog network.

Eberly specializes in American politics, institutions, and policy with a focus on the political and policy legacies of The Great Society. He is writing a book, due after the 2012 presidential election, titled America’s Dysfunctional Political System: Professional Government and Popular Distrust.

Eberly’s current research focuses on the effect of political polarization on effective governance and public confidence and participation in the political process.
