Press Release #12-014

(St. Mary’s City, MD) January 24, 2012—St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s fifth annual film series, Out of Bounds: Feminist Films and Filmmakers, will focus on the work of women filmmakers and women's filmmaking collectives. It kicks off with Yun Suh, who will screen her film "City of Borders" at 8:15 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6, in Cole Cinema in the college’s Campus Center, and answer questions afterwards.

"City of Borders" (2009) follows the underground community at the only gay bar in Jerusalem. Set against the construction of the separation wall between Israel and the Palestinian territories and the struggle for a gay pride parade in the Holy City, five interwoven stories reveal the contradictions and complexities in the gay communities' struggles for acceptance. The film premiered at the 2009 Berlin International Film Festival, and won a special Teddy (Audience) Award; it was broadcast on PBS in 2010.

The other films scheduled for the series: Monday, Feb. 13: "Home Economics" and Monday, Feb. 20:  "Faces of Change.” Each filmmaker in this year’s series has distributed her film through the feminist film collective New Day Films, which just marked its 40th anniversary.
