Press Release #14-053

St. Mary's College of Maryland is pleased to announce that its Governor’s Cup Yacht Race, Aug. 1-2, will be bookended by icons of Maryland’s maritime history: the Pride of Baltimore II will start the race and the Maryland Dove will end the race.

"2014 is the first year in many that Pride has remained in local waters - traveling to as many Maryland ports as possible, celebrating the 200th anniversary of our National Anthem, and sharing the story of Baltimore privateer's role in the War of 1812,” said Rick Scott, executive director, Pride of Baltimore, Inc. “We are thrilled to be able to take part in the Governor's Cup and are grateful to St. Mary's College of Maryland for giving Pride the opportunity to serve as the start boat."

This year will be the 41st running of the oldest and longest overnight race on the Chesapeake Bay, starting from Annapolis, Md., and ending at Church Point, St. Mary’s City— the state’s current and founding capital cities. The Potomac Leg of the race from Dahlgren, Va., added in 2012, will return this year.

The 70-mile race begins on Friday, Aug. 1, at 2:55 pm. Qualified sailors who want to participate in the race are encouraged to register online at the official Gov’ Cup website, All entries must be received by Friday, July 25.
