Orientation 2012!!!

Orientation 2012 dates are August 23rd-26th. Check back later to get a more detailed look at what's going on!

 Summer Reading!!

With a spare and elegant style, Julie Otsuka's first novel, When the Emperor Was Divine (Knopf, 2002) powerfully tells the story of a Japanese-American family who in 1941 after the Bombing of Pearl Harbor was forced to leave their home in Berkeley, California for an internment camp in Utah. Each one of the novel's five chapters narrates the experiences from the unique point of view of a member of that family as they struggle to survive and grasp what it means to be incarcerated by their own government based on their race and cultural heritage. Otsuka's novel illuminates this often overlooked chapter in American history with poignant detail and searing insight while inviting readers to consider the ways in which our own time continues to be threatened by the habits of mind that led to the detainment and imprisonment of over 120,000 Japanese Americans.

The author, Julie Otsuka, will come to campus in August to help us welcome the class of 2016 and inaugurate the academic year by speaking at Opening Convocation and meeting with first-year students.
