Welcome Parents and Guardians of Newly Accepted St. Mary’s Students
If you are the parent or guardian of a student who has just made the decision to join the St. Mary’s College community, welcome. This has been a big decision for your student--perhaps the most important one that they have yet had to make. We hope that you will find useful the “Parent” area of our Web site as you help your student complete the housing forms, look at the schedule of classes, and generally do all of the things they must do to move to St. Mary’s.
For First-Year Parents
Your parenting job is not over, it is just changing. You are entering the Launching Phase of parenting. As students enter into adulthood, it’s important for parents to begin acting as coaches and advisers, helping their sons an daughters make good decisions without “telling them what to do” or “rescuing” them. Here are some ways you can express your caring and enhance your child’s growth into adulthood as well as his or her experience at St. Mary’s.
Awards Convocation
The Awards Convocation includes awards for both faculty and students.
Awards for students are chosen by faculty, the Office of Student Activities, and the Student Government Association. The St. Mary’s College Foundation provides financial support for many of the awards.
Academic awards are distributed by department. Academic honors recognized at the Awards Convocation are: Dean’s List, St. Mary’s Scholars, and Phi Beta Kappa. Distinguished honors recognized are Omicron Delta Kappa and Who’s Who Among American Colleges and Universities. The Office of the Dean of Students coordinates the selection of students named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities and presents certificates to students named.
