         5 Smooth Stones
(Wishes for My Grandchildren)

May you aspire to be holy trouble-makers,
distrusting bureaucracies
confounding the doctrinaire.

May your questions guide you toward humility,
then awe, may your hungers call you to compassion,
your heroes to kindness.

May you nurture
the living
and bury the dead,

And may the stones in your pocket
remind you
that the rivers you walk in
are the river that you will choose to become.
