About the Search
On February 22, 2010, the St. Mary's College of Maryland (SMCM) Board of Trustees named Dr. Joseph R. Urgo as the College's next president. He will join the College July 1, 2010.
The search committee, chaired by Molly Mahoney (secretary of the Board of Trustees) and vice-chair Larry Leak (SMCM alumnus and member of the Board of Trustees) was made up of individuals from the faculty, Board of Trustees, student body, and staff. The committee began work in March 2009 with the executive search firm of Isaacson, Miller.
"The quality of our faculty, students, and staff combined with a compelling mission attracted many extraordinary candidates for the presidency, all of whom recognized what a tremendous opportunity exists for the next leader of the College," said Mahoney. "Several candidates requested confidentiality because of their current positions, so we made the difficult decision not to include candidate campus visits before making our final recommendation to the Board. While this ensured the strongest candidate pool, it makes it of paramount importance that we provide multiple opportunities for our campus community to meet Dr. Urgo in the coming weeks."
