Objectives of the Diversity Requirement

Any course or other experience that is approved for fulfillment of the Diversity Requirement must meet the following objectives:

1. To convey the importance of examining cultural variables in psychological research and theory.

2. To investigate the role of culture in affecting human thought, emotion, and behavior.

3. To promote the exploration of self-knowledge and the development of personal perspectives with regard to diversity and human thought, emotion, and behavior.

4. To expose students to different world views, methodological approaches, research, and theories on human thought, emotion, and behavior.

5. To encourage the development of critical thinking skills in terms of both content and methodology, when considering issues of diversity and multiculturalism in psychology.

6. To encourage the integration of diversity with broader psychological principles and theories.

7. To encourage students to demonstrate competence in the application of diversity principles and research to a breadth of psychological problems and scenarios.

Approved Courses

One way to fulfill the Diversity Requirement in Psychology is through the completion of an approved course.
Traditional Classroom Courses

For the following courses, the diversity requirement will be satisfied if the course is completed with a grade of C- or better:

  • PSYC 335 - Adulthood and Aging
  • PSYC 338 - Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities
  • PSYC 339 - Learning Disabilities
  • PSYC 350 - Psychological Perspectives of African Americans
  • PSYC 353 - Human Sexuality (Note: only sections offered in SP06, SP07, SP08, SP09)
  • PSYC 356 - Psychology of Women
  • PSYC 362 - Focus on Social Psychology: Stereotyping, Prejudice, and Discrimination (SP09)
  • PSYC 362 - Focus on Social Psychology: Attitude Theory and Research (FA09)
  • PSYC 363 - Cross-cultural Psychology
  • PSYC 410 - Service Learning in Psychology
  • PSYC 491 - Special Topics: The Psychology of Food (taught in Alba, Italy during Summer '09)

Future classes that fulfill the objectives of the diversity requirement may be added. Check back for the latest approved courses.

A course taken at another institution that transfers to St. Mary's College as one of above listed courses also fulfills the diversity requirement. Appropriate courses that transfer as upper division psychology electives may be eligible to fulfill the diversity requirement as a Student-Initiated Diversity Experience.

Non-Classroom Courses

For the following courses, the diversity requirement will be satisfied if the experience is successfully completed and a scholarly paper that satisfies the objectives of the diversity requirement is submitted to, and approved by, the Diversity Committee. To fulfill the diversity requirement in graded courses, a C- or better is required. To fulfill the diversity requirement in a credit/no credit course, the scholarly paper must receive a grade of C- or better.

PSYC 197, 297, 397, 497 - Directed Research in Psychology
PSYC 199, 299, 399, 499 - Independent Study
PSYC 398, 498 - Off-Campus Internship
PSYC 493, 494 - St. Mary's Project

By the end of the 4th week of the semester in which the course is taken, a 250-500 word proposal detailing how the scholarly paper in the above courses will meet the objectives of the diversity requirement is required. Both the faculty supervisor and the Diversity Committee will evaluate this proposal.

The scholarly paper must be 3,000-5,000 words, include at least 8 scholarly sources (e.g., journal articles, primary source books), and is due by the last day of classes of the semester in which the course is taken. The Diversity Committee will evaluate the paper to determine if the objectives of the diversity requirement were achieved. Papers that fail to satisfy the diversity requirement can be revised and re-evaluated if done so prior to the end of the Incomplete period of the following semester.

In order to allow time for possible revision and re-evaluation, seniors anticipating a Spring semester graduation MUST turn in their paper no later than the end of the fall semester of their senior year.
