Objectives of the Diversity Requirement
Any course or other experience that is approved for fulfillment of the Diversity Requirement must meet the following objectives:
1. To convey the importance of examining cultural variables in psychological research and theory.
2. To investigate the role of culture in affecting human thought, emotion, and behavior.
3. To promote the exploration of self-knowledge and the development of personal perspectives with regard to diversity and human thought, emotion, and behavior.
4. To expose students to different world views, methodological approaches, research, and theories on human thought, emotion, and behavior.
5. To encourage the development of critical thinking skills in terms of both content and methodology, when considering issues of diversity and multiculturalism in psychology.
6. To encourage the integration of diversity with broader psychological principles and theories.
7. To encourage students to demonstrate competence in the application of diversity principles and research to a breadth of psychological problems and scenarios.
Diversity Speakers & Workshops
Another way to fulfill the Diversity Requirement in Psychology is through attending four (4) speaker presentations and/or workshops and satisfactorily completing accompanying scholarly papers (see details below).
Diversity & Multiculturalism Speaker Series

Each year, 2-4 speakers will be invited to campus to present their work as part of the Speaker Series (check calendar for AY09-10 lectures).
Most speaker presentations will be videotaped and archived at the SMCM Library (see Archived Speakers). Watching up to 4 speakers at the Library and completing accompanying scholarly papers will count towards fulfillment of the Speaker/Workshop option.
Diversity Workshop Series

Each year Psychology Department faculty will offer 1 to 2 Diversity Workshops. The workshops will involve an intensive overview of the role that diversity has on psychological study by using specific case examples.
Details Regarding Accompanying Papers
A scholarly paper describing the role of multiculturalism and diversity in understanding behavior and mental processes must accompany each diversity experience (i.e., a total of 4 papers). Each paper must build upon the diversity experience, include 2 scholarly sources (e.g., journal article, primary source book), and be 750-1250 words in length (not including title & references).
With the submission of the four scholarly papers, the student will include a final synthesis essay of be 750-1250 words (not including title & references) that expresses the ways in which the lectures/workshops contributed to the student's achievement of the objectives of the diversity requirement (see right column). The essay should identify the common themes related to diversity in the four experiences and indicate how the experiences have shaped the student's understanding of the role of diversity in psychological theory and research.
The 4 scholarly papers, and synthesis essay must be turned into the Diversity Committee by the last day of classes of the semester in which the student wishes to fulfill the diversity requirement. The Diversity Committee will evaluate the papers to determine if the objectives of the diversity requirement were achieved. Papers that fail to satisfy the diversity requirement can be revised and re-evaluated if done so prior to the end of the Incomplete period of the following semester.
