 Brought up in a musically gifted family, guitar virtuoso Orlando Roman began his love affair with the instrument at the age of five. He attended the Peabody Conservatory of Music, Florida State University, and Real Conservatorio Superior de Música (Royal Conservatory) in Madrid, where he completed post-doctoral studies.
Dr. Roman achieved high standing in numerous national and international competitions, including first prizes in the Rising Star Competition, the Appalachian State University Guitar Competition, and the Boston Classical Guitar Society Competition. He is a recipient of the National Merit Award, New York Curran Award, Selma Levine Professional Development Grant, Mark K. Joseph Professional Development Grant, Peabody Career Development Grant, and the Maryland State Arts Council Grant. In 2002/2003 Dr. Roman lived in Madrid, Spain, where he represented The United States as a distinguish Fulbright Scholar in music.
Orlando Roman has been a faculty member of the Florida State University, Tallahassee Community College, Darton College and Bainbridge College in Georgia, Selma Levine School of Music in Washington, D.C., and The Peabody Conservatory of Music Outreach in Baltimore. He is currently the guitar chair of the Baltimore School for the Arts, The Academy of Music, and St. Mary’s College. For the past six years he has directed the guitar program at the Young People's Summer Stock Performing Arts Summer Camp in Maryland.
Dr. Roman’s numerous performances throughout The United States, Mexico, Spain, Germany, Colombia, Cuba, and Eastern Europe have been praised for their virtuosity, exceptional musicality and “sensitivity to details.” In addition to his active solo career, he performs with the Aurora Guitar Quartet, and is an in-demand performer and Music Director in the Baltimore-Washington Latin-Jazz scene.
