The Residence Life Staff

Resident Assistants (RAs)

RAs are undergraduate students who live on each wing of the traditional residence halls, in six of the suites in Lewis Quadrangle, in five suites and two apartments in Waring Commons, and in five of the townhouses. They provide information about the College and the surrounding community, and support to all residents. These students know and understand SMCM and interpret policies and procedures. RAs are available to mediate roommate conflicts, report maintenance problems, or refer students to resources on and off campus. RAs develop their leadership skills through training and experience.

Resident Assistants also provide social, educational, and cultural programs for their residents. Programs are designed to emulate the qualities set forth in the College Mission Statement and our housing philosophy. Each program is meant to enhance the liberal arts experience and cultivate a living-and-learning environment. Each semester, RAs assess the needs of their residents to provide tailored programming, and each residential area staff also works together to provide opportunities for residents to get to know each other and build a community.

Residence Hall Coordinators (RHCs)

RHCs are upperclass students who manage the day-to-day operations of the residence halls, suites, apartments, and townhouses. The RHCs supervise and support the Resident Assistant staff within a given area. They are also available to help mediate roommate problems, interpret policies, communicate information, create and disseminate a monthly newsletter, and offer perspective. RHCs live in the front apartments in the traditional residence halls (second floor apartment in Calvert Hall). The RHC for Lewis Quadrangle and the RHC for Waring Commons live in apartments in the Commons Buildings (facing the road). The Townhouse Coordinator lives in Northern Crescent 1.
