Accept the fact that change is inevitable…but some of it will be positive. You will get your car back, there will be less laundry to do, you can watch what you want on TV, and your food bill will probably decrease.
Learn how to feed their fish or other pets.
Continue to be supportive and encouraging.
Remember to pack an umbrella.
Buy your student a snow shovel if he or she is bringing a car.
Obtain copies of prescriptions for medications and be sure your student knows how and where to get them refilled.
Supply a first aid kit with over-the-counter medications, band-aids, etc.
Have faith in your student, and begin letting go.
Prepare an address book with phone numbers and addresses of friends and family.
Learn to program your VCR/DVD/TiVo, boot up your computer, and use any other equipment that your student has monopolized.
Look forward to cutting your own grass and taking out your own garbage!
Check your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance for coverage of property while on campus.
Don’t change their room or rent it out quite yet.
Remind your student to regularly check his/her SMCM e-mail account for important dates and deadlines.
Don’t make the bed or unpack everything for your student
