Tips for Parents

1. Give some lessons on doing laundry.
2. Teach what does and does not go in the microwave.
3. Discuss money—how much you will contribute and how often.
4. Learn to use e-mail.
5. Learn the name of the RA on the floor in case your student needs to be reminded that this person is there as a resource.
6. Pack an extension cord, hangers, and an alarm clock.
7. Buy extra long twin sheets…and remind your student that they do need to be laundered from time to time.
8. Learn the name of your student’s roommate.
9. Send a care package surprise.
10. Be sure your student has medical insurance AND a copy of the insurance card…and knows how to use it.
11. Do not call your student early in the morning.
12. Teach your student to use and balance a checkbook.
13. Buy yourself an SMCM T-shirt.
14. Frame a family picture for your student to take to college
15. Remind your student that no one is the perfect roommate…not even your student!
16. Plan to attend family weekend October 12-15
17. Accept the fact that change is inevitable…but some of it will be positive. You will get your car back, there will be less laundry to do, you can watch what you want on TV, and your food bill will probably decrease.
18. Learn how to feed their fish or other pets.
19. Continue to be supportive and encouraging.
20. Remember to pack an umbrella.
21. Buy your student a snow shovel if he or she is bringing a car.
22. Obtain copies of prescriptions for medications and be sure your student knows how and where to get them refilled.
23. Supply a first aid kit with over-the-counter medications, band-aids, etc.
24. Have faith in your student, and begin letting go.
25. Prepare an address book with phone numbers and addresses of friends and family.
26. Learn to program your VCR/DVD/TiVo, boot up your computer, and use any other equipment that your student has monopolized.
27. Look forward to cutting your own grass and taking out your own garbage!
28. Check your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance for coverage of property while on campus.
29. Don’t change their room or rent it out quite yet.
30. Remind your student to regularly check his/her SMCM e-mail account for important dates and deadlines.
31. Don’t make the bed or unpack everything for your student
