- For easy unpacking, label your boxes and containers with their contents.
- To save space in your closet and dresser, bring summer/fall clothing at first and then take a trip home to switch out for your winter wardrobe.
- Take the time in the first few days to work out a roommate agreement. Discuss the "hot-button" issues such as cleaning, sharing items, primary focus of the room (studying vs. socializing), and staying up late vs. getting up early.
- If roommate issues do arise, communicate with your roommate about them quickly rather than letting them stew.
- Bring a window or box fan for those warmer days.
- SMCM is as safe as you decide to make it. Keep your room door locked and don't give out your room combination out to anyone. Call for an escort if you are uncomfortable walking across campus late at night.
- Bring a copy of your medical insurance card and copies of any prescriptions that you need with you (including those for glasses or contacts!). Know how and where to get them refilled.
- Learn how to do laundry…and do it more than once per semester.
- Call home regularly.
- Eat balanced meals and get plenty of sleep.
- Utilize the ARC for regular exercise.

- Consider bringing a land-line telephone for convenient on-campus dialing, or in case of bad cell phone reception.
- Check your SMCM e-mail account regularly for important dates and deadlines.
- Get involved!
