RAs are undergraduate students who live on each wing of the traditional residence halls, in six of the suites in Lewis Quadrangle, in five suites and three apartments in Waring Commons, and in five of the townhouses. They provide social, educational, and cultural programs, information about the College and the surrounding community, and support to all residents. These students know and understand SMCM and interpret policies and procedures. RAs are available to mediate roommate conflicts, report maintenance problems, or refer students to resources on and off campus. RAs develop their leadership skills through training and experience.
RHCs are upperclass students who manage the day-to-day operations of the residence halls, suites, apartments, and townhouses. The RHCs supervise and support the Resident Assistant staff within a given area. They are also available to help mediate roommate problems, interpret policies, communicate information, create and disseminate a monthly newsletter, and offer perspective. RHCs live in the front apartments in the traditional residence halls (second floor apartment in Calvert Hall). The RHC for Lewis Quadrangle and the RHC for Waring Commons live in apartments in the Commons Buildings (facing the road). The Townhouse Coordinator lives in Northern Crescent 1.
Area coordinators are professional staff members who live on campus and work with student staff and residents. The ACs coordinate the in-hall and large-scale programs sponsored by the RAs, and coordinate staff selection, staff training, and staff evaluations. The ACs directly supervise the RHCs. The AC offices are located in Dorchester Hall. They are available to provide advising and assistance to students, they serve as administrative hearing officers, and they participate in the on-call professional rotation. They report to the assistant director of Residence Life.
The assistant director manages facilities-related concerns and coordinates all aspects of our housing operations, including room assignments, key and combination distribution, openings, closings, and room inspections. The assistant director supervises the two area coordinators and assists the associate dean in managing the day-to-day operations in the Office of Residence Life. The assistant director reports to the Associate Dean of Students.
The associate dean is responsible for the overall administration of the residence life program, including long-range planning, budgeting, staff supervision, new program implementation, the emergency on-call professional system, and interpreting policies. The associate dean also supervises the Offices of Health and Counseling Services. The associate dean reports to the Dean of Students.
