FAQs

Q: When and where are SGA Senate meetings?

A: SGA Senate meetings are held every Tuesday night at 8 p.m. in Goodpaster Hall, room 195.  Senate meetings are open to all students and a student speak-out is held at the beginning of every meeting.

Q: Who is my senator?

A: SGA Senators are elected for each residence area. One Senator is elected for every one hundred students.

Q: What does a senator do?

A: SGA Senators communicate the needs, interests, ideas, and concerns of students at St. Mary's College. One senator is elected for every 100 students and is responsible for acting as a liaison between their constituents and the SGA Senate. Senators communicate with their constituents through regular emails and may also hold meetings or plan activities.

Q: How can I become a senator?

A: SGA Senators are elected at the end of each academic year for the following academic year.  Elections are also held at the begining of every semester to fill vacancys.   Any full time student can run for Senator.

Q: Can I still be involved in the SGA without being a Senator?

A: Yes!  There are many opportunitites to become invovled in SGA activities.  One way is to be a student member of one of many SGA committees.  Each committee needs student representatives, and applications are sent out at the begining of every academic year, and when vacancies become available.   There are many other ways to become invovled, just keep an eye on the SGA website and your inbox for upcoming events!

Q: How do I join a club?

A: St. Mary's has over 90 clubs and organizations. If you are looking for a club to join, you can browse the club list and then contact the club leader of any clubs you are interested in to find out when their next meeting will be held. Also, the SGA holds a club fair at the beginning of each semester. For more information on what clubs are available at St. Mary's, contact Lauren Gill (lagill@smcm.edu), SGA Director of Campus Organizations.

Q: How do I start a club?

A: Once you have an idea for a new club and a group of people interested, you will need to create a club constitution  and send it to the SGA Parliamentarian. The SGA Parliamentarian and the Constitutional Review Committee will review your club constitution and send you feedback and recommended changes if necessary. Once the SGA Parliamentarian and the Constitutional Review Committee approve your constitution, you will attend an SGA Senate meeting to present your idea and club constitution. Senators and others at the meeting will have the opportunity to ask questions, and then the Senators will vote your club constitution. If a majority of the Senators vote in favor of your club constitution, you officially become an SGA club. The next steps will be holding your first meetings and planning activities. In order to get money for your club, you will need to attend a Finance Board fund appeals or budget hearing. You can also hold fundraisers for your club.
