2004 Poetry Winners

The Society for Humanistic Anthropology is pleased to announce the winner of the 2004 Poetry Prize:  Michael GlaserCarolyn Hill-Bjerke , Louise Tokarsky-Unda, Margaret Litvin and Nandini Gunewardena were awarded honorable mentions.  This year’s competition was judged by the poetry editor of Anthropology and Humanism, Dell Hymes (University of Virginia).

Glaser won the prize for four poems: "My Daughter, Dancing,” “Silence,” “Discovering God (in Barnes and Noble),” and “St. Vitus Cathedral.”  In August 2004, Glazer was named Poet Laureate of Maryland; he teaches English at St. Mary’s College of Maryland.  His award-winning poems were published in the June 2004 issue of Anthropology and Humanism.

Nandini Gunewardena won an honorable mention for her poem “Silenced.” Gunewardena teaches anthropology at UCLA and is an executive board member of the Association for Feminist Anthropologists.  Carolyn Hill-Bjerke received an honorable mention for her poems, “Preservations,” “The New York Armory—Friday, September 14, 2001,” and ” Remains.”   She is studying poetry in the MFA program in creative writing at Columbia University.  Margaret Litvin’s two poems, “haitian scene,” and “mango” won honorable mention.  Louise Tokarsky-Unda received an honorable mention for her poems, “Tortillas,” and “La Guadalupana.”  Tokarsky-Unda is a graduate student in anthropology at SUNY-Buffalo and studies Mexican migrant workers.  The honorable mention poems will be featured in the December 2004 issue of Anthropology and Humanism

All prizes will be awarded at the upcoming AAA meeting in Chicago on Fri., Nov. 19, from 4-5:30 pm, in session #657: “Award-Winning Work in Humanistic Anthropology: Readings from this year’s Prize Winners from the Victor Turner, Fiction, Poetry, and Student Paper Prize Competitions”.  All are invited to attend!
