For nearly two decades students at St. Mary's College of Maryland have been compiling cultural histories of Southern Maryland's residents, particularly as these express both a sense of place and of dislocation, as Southern Maryland shifts from a rural to a defense-based economy. The environmental, social, and cultural changes reflected in this shift are best examined through as many disciplinary lenses as possible.
The SlackWater Centers aims to provide undergraduates with meaningful research experiences that make full use of the College's unique historic and geographic location; to promote information sharing and dialogue on regional issues from different disciplinary perspectives; and to foster public outreach and debate.
Most importantly, the Center hopes to make regional research relevant and part of contemporary public discourse and debate.
