SOAN SMP Wins Awards

Dionisios K. Kavadias (’03) has won the St. Mary’s County Historic Preservation Service Award for work he has done in Trinity Cemetery. Surveying the gravestones was part of his St. Mary's Project (SMP) which also received the Geneva Boone Award for SMPs in SOAN and is part of an ongoing project with professors Helen Daugherty and Dan Ingersoll. Dionisios has published several articles and given conference papers as a result of his project. He will go on to study archaeology in graduate school.

Winning Paper

Mike Addabbo, a senior at St. Mary's College, majoring in Anthropology, has won the Student Paper Competition at the Southern Anthropological Society's annual conference. The conference was held this year in Asheville, North Carolina April 4th though 7th. His winning paper, Rocking the Washington Monument, Subverting Capitalism: The Punk Rock Subsulture in Washington, DC, will be published in the fall edition of the society's journal, The Southern Anthropologist.

Anthropology and sociology are logically combined in a single major at a small liberal arts college because both disciplines take the most general views of human, social, and cultural behavior and engage in the study of society in its entirety. They claim much the same intellectual roots, and both fields draw inspiration from the same conceptual framework and have converged upon a common body of methodologies.
