Alpha Kappa Delta

Alpha Kappa Delta is the international sociology honor society. In 1920, University of Southern California sociologist Dr. Emory S. Bogardus, founded AKD for the purpose of stimulating scholarship and promoting the scientific study of society. The impetus in establishing this organization was to provide a forum for student and faculty interchange. As we enter the 21st century, AKD is proud to acknowledge that over 80,000 scholars have been initiated into the Society. More than 490 chapters have been chartered in the United States, Canada, China, Finland, the Philippines, Taiwan and Singapore.
To apply for membership in the international honor society for sociologists: Alpha Kappa Delta, you must have at least a 3.3 GPA, be ranked in the top 35% of your class in general scholarship, and have taken or are currently enrolled in Theory, Methods, and a St. Mary's Project (or senior seminar). In addition, you need three courses (12 credits) in sociology. Most students who are accepted into AKD are seniors, but juniors who have substantial course work completed may apply.
To apply:
Send via e-mail to the sociology department chair, your name and indicate when you will graduate. List your course work in sociology and SOAN and the grades received. If you are currently enrolled in Theory, Methods and/or your SMP (or seminar) please include the instructor's names so that we can verify that you are in good standing in those classes
If accepted, you will be welcomed into the honor society during a dinner in the spring. During the dinner, you will receive an honor cord to wear with your graduation gown. The Department will pay for your membership. Membership includes a subscription to the journal Sociological Inquiry. AKD sponsors student travel to regional meetings and offers monetary awards for travel and scholarships.
The St. Mary's College Chapter of Alpha Kappa Delta, the Mu Chapter of Maryland was chartered in 2001. Students inducted into AKD have achieved academic excellence in sociology.
