During open lab hours, computer labs are monitored a supervisor or a student lab assistant who can help answer any questions. The lab assistants are well-versed in a wide range of software and can solve most user problems. Lab assistants have a designated work station in each lab.
There are four academic labs that Technology Services supports on campus - Anne Arundel, Kent, Montgomery and Schaeffer. Each fall the lab supervisors hire students to work as lab assistants. The responsibilities vary among the labs however; the core job is to support the lab by assisting students with software questions, oversight of labs during evenings and weekends, and maintaining lab equipment on a small scale such as paper in the printers, cleaning labs of paper, etc. Generally the lab assistants should have some degree of knowledge about computing.
Each lab posts their job requirements, schedules interviews and hires their students. The hours of work and job responsibilities are assigned by the academic area but students generally do not work more than 10 hours a week. The pay is $5.15 an hour.
